Shoplifting is Addressed in Criminal Justice Textbook

Dr. Robert O’Block has founded several organizations that aid professionals in the study and practice of forensics and psychology. Holding a doctorate in philosophy, Robert O’Block is also the author of the textbook “Security and Crime Prevention.”

Those pursuing studies in security and policing often refer to the classic textbook “Security and Crime Prevention” for guidance. The book supplements the study of loss prevention and crime prevention for law enforcement students.

The text supports coursework that covers crime-prevention history, physical security, mechanical locks and safes, security lighting and alarms, computer safeguards, and retail security.

One of the areas covered includes shoplifting. The crime usually consists of two main components, one which involves willful concealment of products offered for sale and the other being the intent to deprive a retailer of the possession of said items.

Shoplifters are penalized depending on the value of the merchandise stolen and the jurisdiction in which the crime occurs. Penalties vary widely from community to community. Generally, if the merchandise value is less than $100, first-time offenders are subject to fines. For more substantial losses, offenders may serve time in jail.
